An exhaust upgrade changes how your car sounds and how freely the engine can breathe. The names can be confusing, so here is a quick guide to the main options.
Axle-back
Replaces the section behind the rear axle, usually the muffler and tips. It is the simplest and most affordable upgrade and mainly changes the sound.
Cat-back
Replaces everything from the catalytic converter rearward. A cat-back reduces restriction through the whole rear system and gives a more noticeable change in tone and flow than an axle-back.
Turbo-back and downpipes
On turbocharged cars such as the Falcon XR6 Turbo and Mustang EcoBoost, the piping straight after the turbo matters most. Downpipes, dump pipes and turbo-back systems reduce restriction here, helping the turbo spool and flow. These are bigger upgrades and are often paired with a tune.
Headers
Headers replace the factory exhaust manifolds and are a common step for V8 owners. They are usually combined with a cat-back for a complete system.
How to choose
- Sound: decide how loud you want it. Valved systems let you change the volume with a switch.
- Budget: start with an axle-back or cat-back and add headers later.
- Fitment: match the system to your exact model, year and body style (sedan or ute).
- Rules: noise and emissions rules differ by state, so check what applies to you.
